But on top of all those references, there’s a phenomenal game that forges its own identity and boldly does its own thing. It needs to be said that there’s a real emphasis on Astro Bot in not being punishing; there’s absolutely no penalty for losing a life, and the moment you grab a collectible, it’s yours — even if you respawn, you already have it. That might be disappointing to some, but it’s an intentional design choice that works in the game’s favor, as Astro Bot is much more focused on the “experience” and wants players to have pure, unfiltered fun. There are optional challenge levels that open up later on, however, for anyone who might be craving that.

It will also be interesting to see what kind of new experiences Team Asobi can deliver with its deep knowledge of the DualSense controller. By paying respect to PlayStation’s heritage in new interactive ways, Astro Bot also seems like the perfect game to mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. “For Astro’s Playroom, there have mainly been two types of audiences,” says Doucet.

While the bulk of time will be spent hunting down every collectible and bot, as there are 304 of them at the time of this review, Astro Bot is roughly around 10 hours in length for a standard playthrough. Personally, that length worked well to not overstay its welcome or feel padded, especially as additional content like time trials is set to release for free. Astro’s Playroom, a game bundled in with every PS5 is approximately 3 hours long, and many spent double or triple in that world just exploring and attempting to beat other player’s times at each level. Given the robust nature of what Astro Bot offers here, I could see many spending dozens of hours once that time trial mode is released. Throughout the hour campaign – around 15 for full completion – Astro encounters power-ups that give them abilities like shrinking, stretchy arms, rocket jump, and more. It’s a highlight of how great Astro Bot’s level design is, which easily ranks high among other action platforming gems with its reasonably hidden secrets and gravity-challenging stages.

But, unlike It Takes Two (a great game in its own right), Astro Bot doesn’t feature a single dud. Every power is interesting, has a meaningful impact on the level it’s a part of, and feels like it unlocks a new way to play. While some return from previous Astro outings and others are quite standard, there is a unique flair to how they feed into the level design here. Though completing levels will spawn new ones within the same solar system, there are also hidden mini-levels. You can unearth these by flying into the comets and meteors scattered around, especially once you’ve completed most of the bigger main levels in a zone. After completing a level, restart and you’ll spot a small birdhouse near the start of the level.

On the flip side, this leads to a nitpick regarding the enemies. Besides the bosses, none of the enemies have names or identities. This robs the enemies of the kind of simple but memorable personalities that even the most generic Bots have. This allows players to experiment with Astro Bot’s moveset and his equipment and plan out strategies on how to deliver blows to every boss.

Pre-installed on every PlayStation 5, Astro’s Playroom is a 3D platformer that perfectly demonstrates the power of the PS5 and the unique features of the DualSense controller. If you’ve played it you’ve got an idea of what to expect from Astro Bot; think of it as a precursor, if you will. And if you’ve not played it, go and do it right now; it’s only short, and it should you hate it for any reason, there’s not really any point in considering picking Astro Bot up because you have no soul. On top of all this, Astro Bot is basically a tribute to PlayStation’s history and, in fact, in some ways, the medium as a whole. Sometimes there’s just basic, fun references to classic characters, in-world jokes using PlayStation hardware including zip lines made from PS1 controller cords and the like. However, at other points, you take on the powers of key guest characters from PlayStation’s past.

Perhaps an in-game encyclopedia would be useful, briefly describing the robots dressed in non-familiar outfits. Such a feature would make the game an even greater treat for fans of the Japanese console. Astro Bot may be the best-timed video game release there’s ever been. It’s not intentional, but just days after Sony humiliated itself with the closure of Concord, along comes a PlayStation 5 exclusive dedicated to celebrating the 30 year history of PlayStation. Not only that but it’s a single-player action game with no microtransactions or season passes, or any of the other increasingly invasive hallmarks of modern console gaming.

Astro Bot is a stunning 3D platformer, and easily among the best games in PS5’s library. It fully delivers on the promise of Astro’s Playroom, building on the rock solid core of tight controls and inventive gameplay and turning everything up to 11. With tons to see and do, almost endless fresh ideas, innovative use of the DualSense’s features, and truly charming presentation, it’s a confident and cohesive experience that players of all ages will love. To top it all off, it’s a perfect game to celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, reflecting on the myriad series that made the platform what it is today.
