As Peter and Miles attempt to stop Venom, Peter is debilitated by a trace amount of the symbiote still within him. After Miles settles his differences with Li, the latter uses his powers to convert Peter’s symbiote traces into the Anti-Venom symbiote, which can destroy other symbiotes. Concurrently, Venom recovers the meteorite that originally brought him to Earth and empowers himself with it, accelerating his infestation on New York. Peter and Miles distract Venom while Mary Jane steals the meteorite and destroys it with the EMF’s particle accelerator, destroying Venom’s symbiote horde. At Harry’s insistence, Peter destroys the symbiote and frees Harry from its control, but renders Harry comatose.

This hulking, powerful beast has arrived in Marvel’s New York like a twisted natural disaster. In the aftermath, Mary Jane quits the Daily Bugle to run her own podcast and moves in with Peter, who opts to take a break from being Spider-Man to focus on rebuilding the EMF, trusting Miles to protect the city on his own.

Lizard creates one of the game’s best chases as the hunters and Spider-Men try to nab him across NYC’s waterways. Thankfully, Peter and Miles get to him first, beat him down, and cure him. Connors, after all, is the key to studying the symbiote and helping ensure it doesn’t fully possess Peter. Scorpion returns after the first game, but in a more minimalist role.

Thanks in no small part to the fact that you get to play as him for a stretch. Peter got jealous of Miles’ venom powers – sharing the name of the villain despite having no connection and never being mentioned – so he stole Doc Ock’s arms and made them his own. Even though the four metal arms are usually reserved for the Iron Spider suit.

Upon seeing Peter wearing the exosuit, Connors reveals that it is actually an alien lifeform called a symbiote, which Oscorp obtained years prior from a meteorite, and warns Peter to destroy it. Under the symbiote’s corrupting influence, Peter refuses and keeps it for himself despite learning that Harry’s illness has returned, straining their friendship. As Peter goes on a symbiote-induced rampage against the Hunters (even nearly killing Mary Jane at one point), Kraven captures Miles and forces him to fight Li. Miles overcomes his anger towards Li and helps him escape, directing him to find Peter. Once Li informs him of Miles’ location, Peter arrives to storm Kraven’s fortress in an effort to rescue him and nearly kills Kraven before Miles intervenes, defeating the corrupted Peter and convincing him to remove the symbiote.

With new suit styles you can vary different colour patterns to spin your Spider-Man a fresh look, but the new suit tech system allows you to upgrade various attributes, like traversal, damage and health. Though many of these have indications of their location in-game, not all of them are clear. Traversal too, is more of the same, but that’s hard to knock when swinging around the city as Spider-Man feels this damned good. These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. These later stages are where the majority of Spider-Man 2’s thrills lay, however, as it really hits its stride late on, and emphatically wraps up a tale with miles of emotional depth that never once threatens to peter out. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.
