Suspend your disbelief in a neat little web above your head, dive in with your mask pulled tight over your face, and prepare yourself for the daftest, most earnest action game of 2023. It’s a 20-or-so hour hoot you’re not going to be able to put down until the post-credits scene has rolled. The main difference in the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are more advanced ray tracing options. They allow to get prettier reflections and shadows, as well as more realistic looking lighting (the game supports Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction technology). This port also supports ultrawide screens and playing on three monitors.
On the whole it’s a tried and true set-up for a Spider-Man story—the perils of leading a double life, making sacrifices to do the right thing, all that jazz. But that does also mean it’s a story we’ve seen an awful lot of times before, not only across films, TV, and comics, but also in the previous two games in this series. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lets players swing through the streets of New York as Peter Parker and Miles Morales, facing off against formidable foes in an action-packed superhero adventure. It has connected itself to Peter, and while it enhances his abilities, it also negatively impacts his personality, seeming to slowly take him over. Miles must find a way to help his friend while handling Kraven and the Lizard, with all of New York City’s fate at stake. As the story continues, we see several worlds colliding in the lives of Miles, Peter, and MJ. Miles, a student at Brooklyn Visions Academy, sees all of his friends solidifying their plans for college—but he is feeling left out. He’s been so focused on other things; he hasn’t had time to think about the future. There are plenty of directions he could go but trying to pick the ‘right’ one is overwhelming and paralyzing.
Shortly after the first gameplay sequence debuted, devs shared new details on Spider-Man 2’s moment-to-moment gameplay. First up, in an interview with Famitsu, Insomniac’s creative director Bryan Intihar teased the map “is about two times larger than the previous titles” thanks to the addition of Queens and Brooklyn. The new trailer also showed off the new webwings mechanic, as well as the AR tech fitted to Peter’s and Miles’ lenses. Better still, players can expect the sequel to feature more than 65 suits based on the comics, films, and original designs. There are 14 unique districts, each with its own set of objectives to complete before you can unlock fast travel to that part of the map. Gliding is especially great for crossing long distances thanks to the numerous wind tunnels that carve their way through New York’s seemingly endless grid of streets flanked by art deco architecture and modern mirror-like skyscrapers. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests. Spider-Man 2, and to an extent all great Spider-Man stories, tackle themes of adolescence and puberty – a time of uncertainty for even the most normal of teenagers trying to control bodily fluids.
The game expands on their existing traversal and combat abilities, including new web-based gadgets and suits that can be unlocked through progressing in the story. It also introduces the former Spider-Man’s symbiote suit, granting Parker unique abilities from his previous playable appearance. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 dropped in late 2023 to positive reviews, though it launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, meaning PC players who had invested time in the original game were left out. This was fixed at the end of January 2025, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being brought to PC. In the weeks since, the PC version of the game has now seen multiple updates, all of which have targeted performance issues and bugs. Much like Marvel’s Spider-Man, the sequel also has a slow, but steady build-up, as the game begins with an action segment where players have to save Manhattan from the Sandman.
For players with high-performance PCs, High, Very High, and Ultimate Ray Tracing options are available to more finely tune their experience. With these settings, players can use higher-quality raytracing meshes and use the raytracing object range slider to make adjustments.
